Yu's parents never bought into the hype of the implant. They were hard-working traditionalists who believed that emotions were meant to be dealt with and that technology had advanced too far. They were wary of the new changes and had just moved their family to Yu's mother's native Australia when the bombs dropped.
The family retreated to the Grampians, settling down with others in a small community made up of other families and various individuals that Yu's mum knew. They were focused on survival of their group first and foremost, and building connections with other nearby groups second. From a young age, Yu was trained to survive and stay off the Architects' radar. His parents emphasized the importance of ensuring that he stayed smart and safe while also doing what he needed to survive.
While his parents were busy with taking care of the community, Yu took to helping with scavenging trips and trading with nearby groups, and as he got older, he started trekking into pres cities and smuggling whatever he could out.
It was on one of these trips that he made contact with an UnVeiled for the first time. He was initially distrustful of the agent, but after a few more meetings, he established a connection with them and his group. Most of the group remained distrustful, and few wanted anything to do with the resistance, but Yu, driven by a desire to help on a wider scale, was open to recruitment.
